Press - Reviews

April 2008

"From the opening track 'your own life' and its chilled out reggae - ish grooves through to the more laid back singer/songwriter and even Jazzy tunes the notion of easy listening comes to mind.

"This album would be the perfect companion on a retreat or holiday where you just want to lie in a hammock or sit by the pool and many of the tunes somehow create an islandesque feel and imagery.

"Some good songs and very tasteful production that doesn't get in the way of the music all sit together through a variety of backings to create some wonderful and always relaxed vibes that nicely reference Pene's native land but could easily cross over into a more mainstream market.

"Comparisons - Nora Jones, Jack Johnson, Joni Mitchell.

Definitely recommended listening".

"Flowers and Frolic by Pene Kingsford is a CD composed of gentle easygoing, easy listening music. Pene’s easy style and clear diction makes this a good addition to your library of music. There is a gentle Jazz style to many of the songs on this album. “Lily” is particularly interesting in this multi-styled CD combining rap, with both female and male voices and the female vocal. The introduction and back up in “Fibre and the Weave” bring a slightly different flavor to this collection. Both compositions and vocal works are strong and the pitch perfect vocals are a pleasure. You may want to add this CD to your collection for those lazy, rainy days"

"I love this special collection of songs, written and performed with clarity. Pene’s voice invites us to think about what I call – our self selves, if we wish, or simply enjoy a vocal and musical masterpiece.
Beginning with “Your Own Life”, the 12 tracks form a suite of ‘life’. Hard to pick favourites, for me I particularly enjoy “Tell Me” – the value of good communication, I love “Anticipation” and “I didn’t write your Book” …

Recently, I produced three special features for Radio Port Phillip and your music provided the perfect blend for topics such as Health, Water and our Social Environment. Highly complimentary feed-back from colleagues across the music programs suggest a great deal of joy and success lies in store.

The bonus was to hear you live at Sista Fest early March here just outside Melbourne, solo, hope you enjoyed it as much as the audience clearly did! Look forward to seeing you perform again in Melbourne, and wish you all the best for your next tour.

Quite a special album this. In a word? Evocative? Yes - that's probably the best way to describe it.

I like the arrangements. Done with panache and a sense of knowing what succeeds with these things. It's a mix of experience and intuition at work here. Great playing. You sense each player is working in sympathy with the others. It's a consistent feel too. And pretty good dynamics.

All in all a great record that I hope many people get to hear and enjoy.
